Preface

The Black Aronia Berry Plant (Aronia berry), commonly known as Black Chokeberry, is a productive Native American bush. After breeding in Europe, more productive fruit-bearing plants have recently become popular as a result of being imported into the United States, producing more abundant crops and their major health benefits. Two popular varieties imported into the United States are Viking and Nero. Both of these are black aronia berry bushes. The Viking is about 3-8 feet high and the Nero is 3-5 feet high.

Growth characteristics of aronia berry plants

The black aronia berry plant (aronia melancarpa) grows fast. Young bushes can turn into amazingly large shrubs in just three years. The white flowers come in May after the threat of frost has passed. The flowers are very noticeable against the shiny green of the leaves.

Native to North America, Chokeberry Bush is highly tolerant of growth conditions and tolerates moist or dry conditions and acidic to weakly basic growth media. It can work well in full sun or half shade and is less plagued by insects and diseases. It is cold-resistant and can be planted or transplanted without problems. They have a fairly shallow root system.

It takes three years for chokeberries to start producing a limited amount of berries. In four years you start seeing a fair amount of berries on the plant. It takes about 6 years for the plant to be fully produced.

The berries are ready for harvest from late August to September and are frost resistant. The fruits are pome-like and begin to fall from the plant shortly after maturity. The fruits are quite juicy, but when ripe they begin to shrink. Fresh aronia berries picked from bushes are not very pleasant to taste. Aronia has high tannin levels that make it really sick, but some people say that the taste buds are much easier after freezing or cooking and are fun after freezing. Aronia berries make excellent juices, jams, wines and other products.

Economics of Aronia Berry Bush Production

One mature aronia berry bush can produce 20 to 35 pounds of fruit. From your health point of view, this large yielding plant makes adding some to your garden a very good investment. Cultivation of aronia berries offers great potential for farms and orchards. Aronia plants are easy to grow and maintain. You have to mow between the rows and harvest the fruits. The plants should be about 5-6 feet apart and the rows should be 12 feet apart. The Aronia business has the potential to generate profits. One acre of land can support 700 aronia plants, with an average yield of 20 pounds per plant, producing a total of 14,000 pounds of fruit per acre per year. Aronia Berry's current 2011 market value is $ 1.00 to $ 1.45 per pound. That's $ 14,000 a year in revenue per acre.

Landscaping

Aronia plants make wonderful landscaping plants and can grow in towns and countryside. They are low-maintenance bushes that are easy to grow and add beauty to almost any landscape.

Autumn Magic is a chokeberry variety promoted by the British Columbia Botanical Gardens. More compact than Viking and Nero bushes, the leaves are shiny and bear larger fruits than other aronia varieties.
