The ability of forests to mitigate warming temperatures and climate change varies significantly between tropical, temperate and boreal forests. Scientists have found that boreal forests do not absorb as much carbon dioxide or cool by evaporation, but absorb more of the suns energy. Conversely, tropical and temperate forests strongly absorb CO2, and cool more by evaporation.
Forests are being cut at an alarming rate for wood products and to make room for grazing, agriculture and housing. As more roads are cut through forests for access and more forest edges are exposed, forests are more susceptible to pests, disease and fire.
