Short Story "The Race" by Jose H. Lopez

Yesterday I blogged the news that I was writing a narrative short story for my college English class. The assignment was quit simple, write a story at least 3 pages long, incorporating all the elements of a good story. I tackled the project head on and began to brain storm while in class. The pen just rolled and the ideas flowed out, in a few minutes I had written the plot of the story and climax point. To be honest with you, the story dint come out as I had planned on my summary, but who cares, nothing is written in stones right.

Anyways, the point is that I sat down and wrote a few hours Wednesday night, and a few more hours Thursday afternoon. For some reason I just seemed dive into the story and would spend a few hours without notice typing in the computer. I was sure I had to finish by Friday night, I need time to analyze and go through the editing process. Three hours flew past me without notice, but with little trouble I finished the story. I am proud of my self, never thought I could write so much and with such passion. The plot in the story changed from what it was originally designed to go, yet I am more than pleased with how it turned out.

The story is about a young man who ends his underground racing career in the most stunning and life changing way you can imagine. The story takes place in a twenty four hour time frame, somewhere in a small town. Dialpuge between the charcters is seen and helps the story take shape and feel more realistic. I aimed for a “show don’t tell” writing style with lots of ambiance descriptions to build up the individual scenes. Here’s a small part of the story;

The people in the streets ran to see the two cars speed down the road running past each of the few traffic lights in the town. Just as both cars were about to run past the last traffic light in Main Street, out sled Mat in his EVO drifting into Main Street nearly running into Joe. It was all out once again, it was time to end this. Joe fell behind the two cars as he looked down to open up the nitrous bottle under the passenger seat, just as he places his eyes back on the road all hell broke loose.
