'maChina's
I created shoe packaging for shoes called Boeing 767’s.

Boeing 767’s are plastic Chinese shoes that are imported from China to Africa. They are widely popular on the African continent because they are affordable and durable, but they are uncomfortable and the local African traders cannot compete with the competitive Chinese prices. I answered the brief by creating packaging that involves employing locals to hand-print fabrics to line the shoes for improved comfort, and to hand-stencil the packaging design onto upcycled rice bags. The bags have been designed through a sustainable process and can be reused as shopping bags.

The Shoes
The shoes are lined with padding and hand-printed fabric to make them more comfortable.
The Website
The main purpose for the website is to communicate ‘what’, ‘who’ and ‘why’ as well as to provide a call-to-action for people to donate.
The Packaging comes with a booklet to educate people on the issue of Chinese imports in Africa.
The Shoes come wrapped in Chinese newspaper with an authentic Chinese fan-fold
The Packaging
The packaging for the shoes is made from upcycled rice bags. The design is done with stencils so that it’s easily replicable. It comes with a booklet to inform people about the concept of generating work here in Africa through Chinese imports. The booklet also gives a face to the people working on the products and encourages people to donate towards the project.

The Making Of
I made this video to demonstrate how easily and cost-effectively the ’maChina’s packaging can be hand-made using sustainable materials.
