Illinois Institute of Technology - College of Architecture
ARCH543 Graduate Design Studio: Residential - Fall 2020
Project Title: The Sieve: Apartments for the New Normal
Location: Uptown Neighborhood, Chicago
Design Team: Alice Gao, Albert Santoso
Principal Studio Profs.: David Brininstool & Andrew Metter
CONCEPT: EXPOSURE MEDIATION
The aim of The Sieve is to mediate exposures to the various negotiated interactions between communal and private activities.
DESIGN STRATEGY: FILTER
The Sieve strategy seeks to use layering of different programs in order to control the privacy of different spaces. The program is layered yet intertwined, between programs, as well as to the city and the natural surroundings.
ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION
The Sieve has a series of screen elements that responded to physical environment. The screen on each sides is an expression of a different sustainable strategy pertaining to that specific orientation the issues that must be addressed, so it will make a comfortable housing environment for each of the occupants regardless of which direction they happen to be facing. The Sieve is divided into 3 main program parts: Public, Semi-Public and Private. Each of the programs has its own filter to target the right visitor or occupants. The Commercial area is the most public area, the daycare is a Semi-Public area, and The Housing Units are the Private area. The Sieve also has a public outdoor space at the north of the site to connect N Winthrop Ave and N Broadway.
