Senior Thesis (in-progress)

"Vel O'city", 11x17, micron pen, Photoshop. A parkour professional who finds herself torn between Sun Shard City's two parkour forces: the Sprinters, an underground courier business, and inFLUX, a mysterious organization aspiring to become the new police.
"Vel Expressions", 17x11, Photoshop. Although outgoing and compatible, Vel tends to be selective towards people and only has very few close friends--mostly because of her insecurities toward her life skills in general. She is passionate and adventurous in her parkour, but fears it's the only thing she is good at. Although she gets easily annoyed, she will be there for anyone who needs it.
"Vel's Parkour", iPad Pro, Astropad/Photoshop, 17x11". I updated her gestures to keep up with her hair and making each drawing of her consistent. We have the basic movements of parkour: dash, vault, dive kong, and some landing positions. I might add more...
"Nahlah Zarazoga", 11x17, micron pen, Photoshop. Vel's love interest. Nahlah started off as a masseuse at Spa&Soul at the mall, but got personally recruited by inFLUX to do physical therapy for its athletic elites. She often massaged Vel's comrades Tony, Pepper, Reagan, and Loraine--regulars--who started bringing Vel along once they recruited her.
"Nahlah Zarazaga Expressions 1", iPad Pro, Astropad/Photoshop, 17x11". Due to her shy personality, she seemingly has a small range of emotions that do not appear abrupt or exaggerated-- but they are subtle from each other. Look closely enough, and she is a woman of conviction with set morals....
"Nahlah Zarazoga Expressions 2", iPad Pro, Astropad/Photoshop, 17x11". When around her own friends--and especially around Vel--Nahlah gradually opens up and shows her playful side. Being as thoughtful as she is, Nahlah is easily dissuaded when she feels she has hurt someone or vise versa...
"Nahlah's Gift." It symbolizes Nahlah's cultulral background but most importantly her romantic, shy gesture to Vel. I wanted the figurine to be faceless to add meaning, and to have it chiseled and home-made, with bold colors, to represent Nahlah's Hispanic background. UPDATE: with everyone else's opinions, I chose the second from the left. She is rendered with some texture, shadows, etc...
"Vel and Nahlah Interactions", iPad Pro, Astropad/Photoshop, 1711". I thought it was important to show the many different aspects of their relationship that every couple in love goes through. They are both equally confident yet shy in their own ways, more than one than the other at different imes.
"The Shard Sisters", 11x17, micron pen and Photoshop. The urban legends of parkour in Sun Shard City, one of the driving forces of the protests and gang violence. However, their intentions or operations are unclear, which propels the frustrated inFLUX to recruit our protagonist Vel to locate them.
"Kibou", 17x11, micron pen, Photoshop. Vel's comrade from the Sprinter business. Her parents never supported her participation in parkour, explaining her dedication and life to parkour. She's been trying to teach Vel the Filipino martial arts, Kali, for a while. She grow suspicious of Vel's activities, especially after their mentor Teel warned them not to get involved with inFLUX...
"Kibou Expressions". Vel and her agree that they are not best friends, but "good sparring buddies" in their comraderie in the Sprinter business. She's casual in socializing but the moment she starts training, she is energetic and fun, however, is more cautious than Vel's recklessness.
"Teel Turnaround", 11x17, micron pen, Photoshop. "Ross Teel" recruited Vel ever since he saw her in 400meter sprints in high school track. He used to parkour and founded the Sprinter business, but now uses his multiple maintenance/janitor jobs to sneak Sprinter courier tubes all over rooftops of Sun Shard City.
"Teel Expressions", Photoshop. He has a father-like temper, especially when it comes to Vel's complaining and disobedience regarding their Sprinter business. He always saw "parkour with police as a chance at power", therefore, forbid Vel and Kibou to get involved with inFLUX. His nosiness worsens when he suspects Vel sneaking off to inFLUX, especially when infamous gangsters get involved...
"Dwell", 17x11, Photoshop, micron pen. "Dean Well" is leader of the parkour gang, the Skinners, whom Kibou used to run with. He becomes a new idol to Vel in her mid-life crisis, reminding her why she loves parkour.
"Dwell". New leader of Kibou's former parkour crew, the Skinners. He becomes pivotal in turning Vel's life around during her dilemma with inFLUX.
17x11, Photoshop. The comical macho of the elite inFLUX team. He is at first mistrustful toward Vel's recruitment in inFLUX's goals, but immediately jokes perversely with her and eventually crushes on Vel. This aids her against trivial team outbursts, but gets in Vel's way to spend time with Nahlah.
17x11, Photoshop. The "gets-it-done" errand girl. Though her parkour background is a mystery, her disdain toward Vel's recruitment is not. Reagan's sarcasm goes well with Tony's playfulness, but ruins the team dynamics/operations whenever she and Vel bicker. Although she doesn't show it, inFLUX means everything to her. She fully believes they can use parkour to fight crime, to add more purpose to it--and enjoys its luxurious benefits, too.
17x11, Photoshop. The organizer of inFLUX, who, with an iron fist, overlooks the city surveillance, operates the hunt for Sprinter tubes, and orders who does what, where, and when. Despite her teammates' high regard to her, she and Vel butt heads.
17x11, Photoshop. The sweetest of the group--because that's her job. Her comrades joke she is the "therapist/advertisement agent" of inFLUX's goals--the recruiter who pyscho-analyzes the common persona and thread between all traceurs. She is more laid-back compared to Loraine, but has been loyal to her ever since their college years as best friends. Although playful with everyone, she tends to be the adult mediator in disputes.
17x11, Photoshop. Character line-up for scale. The team in their undergarments to help differientiate them from each other. I wanted to show that they're their own distinct personalities, but show a unified feel.
17x11, Photoshop. In-progress. inFLUX's eventual "upgrade" later in the series. I combined Paris police armor with fencing uniforms. I decided white best colored their theme and goal: a utopian city cleansed of crime and dirt.
"Boone the Parkour Pitbull". 17x11, Photoshop. Tony's dog...and a great buffer between him and Vel in their harsh conversations. Unfortunately, this dog is taught more than just simple dog tricks...
"Vel's Waterbottle Tube", 11x8.5. My final decision on Vel's courier tube for the secret Sprinter delivery business. Its color, shape, and function had to look like a pipe but act as lightweight vessel for delivery.
"The Sprinter's Courier Tube", 11x8.5. The Sprinters' courier tubes are disguised as urban pipes (plastic/metal/etc), AND waterbottles. The internal diagram shows its function as a waterbottle at the top, and the secret compartment for messages at the bottom...Still trying to figure these out, too
"Vel's Glove", 11x8.5. Figuring out her long-arm glove.
The following props are for Nahlah's green roof gardening tools, the plants in her house, and the Wheely Handy product Vel buys to remove her calluses from parkour (from my animatic, "Calluses"). This first page is to be finished...may add a few more props, too...
"Midnighters Book Cover", as presented at my Senior Thesis Show!
"Midnighters Plexi-Glass Book Sleeve" as presented at my Senior Thesis Show! I got the measurements laser-cut, including the title, so the glass theme stayed consistent with the setting of my story, Sun Shard City. I apologize for the messy glue.
"Senior Thesis Display". My Midnighters book, the title display glass, and instead of a business card, stickers to promote my portfolio site. They were all gone by the end of the show!!!
"Dive-Roll into the Parkour Story". A sneak-peek into the concept book.
"Kibou Expressions" in the book!
"The Process". What Vel and Nahlah would have looked like, especially their hair!
Storyboards in the book for "Midnighters". On my Behance site the animatic can be found under "For You-Animatic"
