Assignment 2: Packaging & Form Follows Function
Final package product
Dielines
Concerning the physical design:
This uncommon package construction is designed specifically to highlight and showcase the unique airpod “soundwave” wire sculpture. An unfolding and expanding package structure, inspired by an existing dieline online, the wire soundwave is revealed to be surrounded by a blue marble interior upon removing the package top. Traditionally, airpod cases serve the more practical functions of protection and charging. However, this package is more of a presentation for the piece, structured to bring excitement and elegance to the interaction with this reimagined object. The hexagonal shape brings both visual interest as well as accommodating surface area to house the nontraditional airpod shape. Flanking each side, triangular origami-like folds serve to protect the object and allow for flexible expansion and contraction of the package when opened and closed. This adjustable nature is enhanced by the paper materials used for both exterior and interior. All of these structural elements assist in creating a much more engaging experience as the intriguing hexagonal structure open up into an expanding box lined with a bright and exciting interior.

Concerning the visual design:
A highly technological and advanced product in reality, this re-interpreted structure required a similar sophisticated and elegant presentation. The package is formed from black paper with metallic designs on top, creating a more minimal but intricate surface design. The top and bottom are covered in gold soundwaves reflecting the content of the object within. Because of the expanding nature of the package upon opening, the interior is designed to unfold with similar awe and beauty as the main product is presented on a pedestal. While the hexagonal and triangular folds of the sides are lined with a popping marble and metallic blue surface, the remaining areas are black, allowing for more overall contrast and visual consistency.
