On January 19, 1840 Captain Charles Wilkes claimed Antarctica for the United States. While they voyaged they explored  1,500-mile of the eastern Antarctic coast. As time progressed this part of land became known as Wilkes Land. During 1959, They created a treaty known as, "The Antarctic Treaty". This lead Antarctica to become an international zone. Throughout there voyage they had many fears, such as what dangers lurked within the ocean. They knew they needed to explore for their country. Captain Charles Wilkes was very passionate about the trip and what would be needed to get there and claim it for The United States.

In this project I decided to highlight animals and objects that went into this voyage. The fears, the symbols, and the animals. I decided to highlight the fears of the unknown as I'm sure there were many. The unknown , especially for a couple of voyagers must sound terrifying. I used thunder bolts, to represent the weather that was going on as they made their way to Antarctica. I also added two of the united states flowers such as a poppy and an Aster flower. Both these flowers added to the American pride that comes with the voyage as it was a milestone the United States obtained the day they claimed it as our own.
