Packaging & Form Follows Function
The package is meant to display and sell the product "Kee," produced by the brand with the same name. Kee is a generic, blocky key, and the package aims to foreshadow this quality. In research, I found three specific packaging's to be main influences. The first is the Got7 Flavor Powder design by Kira Bausch. The cylindrical shape being contrasted with the square label, along with the use of vibrant colors, served to be the core blueprint of the "Kee" package. Its structure was a round paper box, and seeing the display of it, I found that to be most appropriate for my design. Another design I was inspired by was Welly by Tanya Kar; the juxtaposition between strong warm tones and a deep blue was the specific type of bold that I was looking for. Although its presentation was created digitally, I was drawn to the long, cylindrical shape of the packages. And finally, the last package I took from was the blond haircare designs by Laura Miller. The simple and clear sans-serif font is no-nonsense, and it enhances the more angular sections of the bottles. I was motivated by the matte-ness of the surface, the emphasis on the red color, and its asymmetry, with one side having larger angles compared to the other.
I chose a cylindrical package as the main structure for the package, as it contrasts with Kee's squareness and angularity. But, as to not completely isolate the quadrilateral aspects of its design, I repeated some rectangles in the 3D design and the 2D design. I cut out 2 rectangular windows in the cylinder, not only to display the real product, but to also add uniqueness to the package's design. The inner package, which holds the product, is also a rectangular prism with a rectangular cut-out on its top. The blue of this smaller design pops out from the red part of the key, and it acts as a representational stand-in for the bottom of the key, echoing its blue bottom section. The 2D decorations of the package are meant to parallel the physical aspects of Kee, with a bold red being the dominant color, deep blue being secondary, and bright pink being tertiary. The inside of the package is a simple pink because the red of the Kee pops out against it, and pink is a slight hue mix of red and blue, remaining on the warmer side. The blue rectangles on the side and top of the cylinder add to the general square motif. Additionally, it represents the smaller blue inner package. The label "Kee" is in a rectangle as well for the same reason, and I chose a blocky font to write it, as it matches with the rigid design of Kee. And, I decided that surfacing of the package to be matte in order to match the foam texture of Kee.
