Historically, giving has followed the economy. During a downturn, the wealthy and foundations continue to give, but everyday giving drops—maybe someone who usually writes a check for $50 to United Way instead writes one for $20. But people really stepped up. The first half of 2020 saw a 19.2% increase in everyday giving, smaller gifts but more of them. It really restores my faith in the human spirit that in a time of great need, people pulled together and were moved to help. - Bryan Cumby
