Ruckus Nursery is a small business in Portland, Oregon, specializing in a hard-to-find desert plant popular with landscape designers and plant junkies for its architectual appeal, drama and drought and cold tolerance. The client wanted to make sure people knew right away that they were sellers of this plant, resulting in the final logo solution.

The brand identity plays with contrasts—mixing delight, boldness, control and surprise all together. The burst of leaves on the logo can stand alone as a dingbat or larger background graphic.
Brand identity takes inspiration from Japanese design. Even though Ruckus sells desert plants, its owner is very much drawn to Japanese garden design for its focus on drama, surprise and restraint all at the same time.
Proper planting is critical to the success of the plant so a graphic was created for the website and plant hangtags.
Working on a tight budget, the booth used a printed banner and hand-drawn graphics on dropcloth canvas.
Canvas dropcloth with graphics drawn in colored pencil.
