SHINING LIGHT ON MODERNIST PASSAGEWAYS
What is it that makes an area remarkable? How to create a recognisable spot in the city? How to make public art perfectly integrated with architecture? These were the questions we were asking ourselves when drafting ideas for these two neon installations. Both located in ceilings of monumental passageways between modernist buildings in a harbour city of Gdynia, they illuminate, guide and transform these otherwise dark and possibly unsettling spaces.
PASSING THROUGH ANOTHER DIMENSION
The AK25 installation depicting a spiral shape was designed in-house as part of a long-standing collaboration with the municipality. AK25 is an abbreviation of the building’s address — Armii Krajowej 25, while the spiral can be interpreted in many ways — as a reference to Fibonacci’s ideas, a sea-shell or an outer space inspired motif.
LOCAL VIBES
The second neon is situated in the passage between two public library buildings, glowing over a flight of stairs. The design, created by the Full Metal Jacket Studio and curated by Traffic Design as one of the Biennale of Urban Art & Design pieces, was inspired by a marine signal flag code. A trained eye will be sure to pick up the abbreviated name of the district used by the locals — WZG. The placement of square "flags" mirrors the passageway’s design. The neon structure accentuates the entrance to the residential area of the Wzgórze Świętego Maksymiliana district, casting light on the street and increasing a passer-by’s sense of security in the evening hours.
