Apophenic Illustrations gone digital


Usually my illustrations are based on coffee, tea, juice and paint splotches. These chaotic textures provide my brain with the basic material to construct fantastic animals, weird creatures and surreal scenes. It´s like seeing faces in the clouds - we all remember doing that as a kid. Psychologists have a term for this ability of the brain and call it "apophenia". So until now I used apophenia with my analogue tools.
 
This time I thought why not bringing this to another level - to use digital tools instead of the analogue splotches and ink, I usually work with?!
See what happened and how it finally winded up as CD-Cover

First I chose a random smoke brush and started messing around.
I detected a little creature/face turned upside down, extracted and started to rearrange it.
I enjoyed the look, started to see more opportunities and wanted to push it further til ...
I found a cartoony figure with some kind of aviators cap smoking a cigarette,
 
I zoomed in and found a lot more ...
like the light monkey head on the upper left, for example ...
the guy with the helmet and the clowny "schnozzle" in the middle, ...
... and the hidden elefant´s head,
 
... this sphinxy, female, figurehead-like thing with caterpillar feet, just to name the most obvious.
I suggested it as CD cover design to german magazine "VISIONS"  for their monthly music compilation ...
