"SABRE was established in 1985 by Basil Mills, to re-enact historical battles from South Africa and abroad. Today, SABRE has over two hundred members across the globe. For Basil, the re-enactments he stages are a way to pay respect to those who have fallen in battle, honour their heroism, and bring history to life through spectacle and story-telling. In this performance, SABRE will be re-enacting The Battle of Prestonpans and Culloden. A group of twenty SABRE members, armed with cannons and muskets, will be representing the English Army. Anthea Moys, armed with bagpipes, will be representing the Scottish rebels."

Anthea began her training with renowned bagpipe instructor Chris Terry one month before the actual battle. This was one of the more difficult challenges and she has a new found respect for bagpipe players.
Anthea scored 5 points for winning the battle of Preston Pans, which was a good start, but then she lost terribly to the English in the battle of Colluden, earning the city of Grahamstown 10 points. Current score: 5:10.

“What she brought is a very interesting concept by being on her own and being a woman standing up with all the trials and hassles of this country at the moment and I think it was a nice way of introducing the idea that woman can make a difference in this country. And also her concept of getting people together and making friends.”

Basil Mills Head of SABRE (South African Battle Re Enactments) and Education Officer at NELM in Grahamstown. Basil was also my real entry point into getting to know Grahamstown in the beginning, as he had ties to my family and was very good friends with Guy Butler, who was my grandmother's brother.
