THE BRINE BEAST PROJECT

The Brine Beast is located in the salt fields. The beast is a naturally cooled salt enclosure within the salt field. The dynamic nature of the process that creates this structure
creates a ‘living’ effect that provides an interesting dimension to the name Beast.

This experiential woven cooling tower controls its own interior temperature. Salt brine misters are woven into the walls that provide a continuous flow of fine saltwater
spray. The constant misting and the exterior heat create humidity and evaporation, yet the space is not completely enclosed therefore the humidity is released and a cooling effect takes place as the humidity escapes the enclosure via endothermic effect.

As the process of misting saltwater onto the structure continues, it begins to transform with the salt, yet another dynamic lifelike feature. As the water evaporates, the solid salt crystals remain; the weave becomes an encrustation of the salt crystals, creating strength as the water dries and the salt hardens.
The weave controls numerous environmental qualities. It separates the contrasting interior and exterior, it holds the misters and controls natural sunlight through apertures that also create ventilation.

The base that carries this woven structure is a slanted trough. The slanted exterior of this capture basin will carry the excess saltwater and brine that drips down from the weave and will pour out into the salt field. The trough also has an opening at the center, creating its own internal salt field within the woven structure as the water evaporates.
