Student Cookie Redesign Project

Packaging Design

Project DART177: Redesign a cookie carton that you find in the store and create a digital 3D mockup as your final work to post on Béhance

This is the last project for my DART177 Principles of Digital Design class at Golden West College. I also teach similar classes with like projects in my ART G115 and DART 103 classes. These are beginning to intermediate graphic design classes.

The project is to find a box of cookies in a local store and use it to redesign a new package. I am in no way suggesting that the current package designs are sub par, but the students do need to learn from the real world of marketing and ways they may see to improve it. They explore color theory, illustration vs. photography of product, balance, hierarchy and so forth.

I always pick a package to redesign with my students. It's usually arbitrary and something I have around the house. The steps of my design process shown here are less to show off my work and more to show my students how to start a packaging project, how to develop their work, and finally, how to present their work on Béhance. This posting shows the marketing and early design processes I have them do and is an example for my students how they might want to display their final project along with some ideas and sketches how they got there.
