Kookaburra
2019
9 x 12 in
The goal of this work was to experiment with watercolor as it was a medium I wasn't very familiar with yet. I wanted to make something scenic that depicted flora and fauna. I used to live in Australia so I found this picture of a Kookaburra sitting in a eucalyptus tree on my phone. It is a native bird species and it has a distinctive call which sounds like someone laughing. The work reminds me of the early mornings where I would be woken up by the calls of the Kookaburra. A part of the piece that I struggled with was making the leaves. It is evident in the lower left hand corner where a part of the tree is sticking out. I initially couldn't find an effective technique to make the leaves but then I soon discovered that by using one stroke of the brush multiple times, it created the effect I wanted.
