This was the magazine cover I used as a reference.
These are the main source images I photographed.
“Thrasher”
This is a 2400px x 3150px magazine cover I made for a class. The mediums I used were: Adobe Photoshop (to edit source images), A Canon EOS (to shoot the source images), and Adobe illustrator (for text and layout).

The purpose behind the magazine cover was that it was made as part of the final project in my photography class.

The client in this case was technically my instructor of the course, Natalie Endicott. The goal of the assignment was pretty straight forward. We had to choose a magazine cover we liked and then recreate said cover using our own photographs and designs while still remaining faithful to the original cover. We also had a set of guidelines to follow that the instructor had for the assignment.

I began by thinking on what magazine I could use as a reference. I decided on “Thrasher Magazine”, a skateboarding magazine that’s main focus is skateboarders and the subculture. After consulting with the instructor and getting the ok from her I looked at the covers of some issues I owned and decided on one that I felt I could recreate while meeting the criteria of what was asked. Soon after deciding I scheduled a skating session with a friend and (with his permission) took a few action shots of him on his board in the hopes one could be used for my cover. I then went home and began to look through the pictures and after checking in with the guidelines of the assignment, I decided on one of him in the air. With that main image decided on I felt I needed a better background for the cover and set out around town and took pictures of settings I thought looked appealing. I ended up coming across a mural and took a few photos of it from different angles. After planning how I’d set up the images together and consulting with Natalie and a few other students I came up with the final design seen on my cover. I achieved this using Adobe Photoshop by cutting out the picture of my friend and fitting it over the image of the mural setting. After tuning the properties of each image, I felt they looked believable enough together and moved on to the rest of the design. Moving on to the text, I downloaded a similar font to that of the original magazine and using Adobe Illustrator applied appropriate text and positioned it around the image along with the magazine logo. Having a rough draft finalized I consulted with the instructor and we both agreed the text needed something to make it stand out from the background images but not so much that they seemed out of placed. It was then I decided to pull some of the colors from the background image and use them in the text as font colors. The design and layout were then approved by the instructor and I. Soon after the cover was finalized and submitted.
