It started young & very subtly.
When I was small, Pale white color crayons were named flesh/skin color.. As a brown girl living in a country of brown people obsessed with fair skin. I used to be ashamed of my "tanned" skin. Always envied that peachy glowing skin we saw on TV, in ads, magazines & films.
Many times I was "advised" to stay out of the sun & not play volleyball lest I "tanned" & need to work hard to become fairer.
Those days are long over. I am proud to be all the colors I am and can be.
