Shanti Leather Workshop for Exchange Students | 2012

Student Exchange Programs are not just for the visiting students to learn from teachers in other schools, but also to interact with other students and learn things outside the curriculum. So when a group of students from ESAD, France visited NID Ahmedabad, while I was a student there, I conducted a workshop on Shanti Leather - a traditional technique of painting by hand on vegetable tanned leather - which is something that I personally know, but which was not part of the NID curriculum.

For this workshop, the students created a simple hand-painted leather coin purse using only manual tools. The leather was measured, cut, painted, folded, punched & laced up to form a coin purse with a tie-up closure. The students chose to paint images of things that would remind them of their time in India, so that the purses would become their personal souvenirs.
