Periodontal Disease and Secondhand Smoke

Periodontal Disease and Secondhand Smoke
Periodontal Disease is the breakdown of the gum tissues and bone that surround your teeth and attach your teeth to your jaw. It is the number one cause of tooth loss worldwide. Inadequate oral hygiene and infrequent professional care lead to periodontal disease. There are many modifying factors that can also lead to the progression of this disease. Genetic predispositions, grinding or clenching your teeth during sleep or daytime, diabetes and many other medical conditions are all contributing factors. Smoking is a significant risk factor as well.

Smoking tobacco AND vaping products interferes with the function of healthy gum tissue cells. It is well known and researched that being in the presence of smokers (secondhand smoke) is a great risk factor for cancers, heart disease, asthma and a host of other medical conditions. Long term research has also shown that secondhand smoke can threaten your oral health. A study in the American Journal of Public Health showed that even a few hours of exposure per day to secondhand smoke can double your risks of developing periodontal disease.

Warning signs of periodontal disease are swollen or tender gums, bleeding upon brushing or flossing, chronic bad breath, changes in your bite, loosening of your teeth. If you are surrounded by loved ones or others that chronically expose you to second hand smoke, encourage them to quit not only for their own health but to help preserve yours and those around them.
