Above is an alphabet for the newly created typeface: GUNTHER. This is a very simple sans serif font that comes off as bold while still feeling stripped back. I arrived at this final typeface after a lot of sketching and brainstorming – I've documented my process further below.
The pangram "FIVE QUACKING ZEPHYRS JOLT MY WAX BED" seen above demonstrate what GUNTHER would look like in a complete sentence.
In my rough sketches, I experimented with how I could make a legible letter with the fewest lines. I started with a groovy layered style (right), then tried a geometrical box letter style (middle), but eventually landed on a simple style (left). As one can see, I starred the letters that I liked most and brought those sketches to life in illustrator.
I used my name "Jake" as a starting point and quickly realized that the curved letters like "J", "C", "G", "Q", and "B" would be the most difficult to make. So I focused on perfecting the letters with more naturally straight lines and then I manipulated the curved letters to fit my style. I began to assemble all of my letters in an alphabet and continued to edit line lengths and widths until there was consistency among all my letters.
