10,000 Steps Challenge Website

10,000 Steps® Challenge
The 10,000 Steps® Challenge is a team-based workplace wellness programme. Employees sign up and join forces with team-mates, with whom they use pedometers to walk around a virtual map of Australia or New Zealand; the goal being to achieve an average of 10,000 real-world steps per day.

Vitality Works approached us to develop the website, with a focus on customisation - the challenge website service is sold to various Australasian businesses and each instance needs to reflect the client's brand.

Another key goal was for the site to feel social and alive. We proposed a 'Locker Room' area where users can engage in chat with each other, view other teams' progress and view their personal and team stats. Each user is recognisable by a self-chosen avatar; another way the site feels more personal and fun.

I was responsible for the design of the website and user interface, as well as project management. I liaised with the web development team responsible for building the back-end and designed the site with CMS flexibility in mind.
Customisation was a major part of the project. Vitality Works are able to set up a new challenge instance and choose the logo (shown top left), colour scheme and hero/brand imagery. This instance is for Telecom New Zealand; the brand's blue colours are reflected throughout.
The Telecom logo and blue colours of this menu are defined via the CMS. A client-wide step count is shown at the top of every page.
'My Stats' - users are able to see the progress they have made during the challenge, including improvements on each week's step counts. Team progress is also displayed.
Powered by the Google Maps API, the focal point of the challenge is the map of New Zealand (or Australia). Teams are plotted on the map using clever logic - clients can set the real-world duration of a challenge (eg. six weeks) and the backend then works out how far in km each 10000 steps should be, to ensure most teams walk the whole country within the timeframe. Clients can also choose custom routes so they can travel through areas of significance to the business.
