The European Immunization Week 2013
From 22 to 28 April 2013, all school children, their parents, schools, teachers and doctors are reminded that children must receive their second measles vaccination in the fifth grade. "Operation vaccination" goes into battle with the spread of the virus. The aim is to eliminate the disease by 2015.
The measles can lead to encephalitis, pneumonia, middle ear infection ... A total eradication of the virus is impossible. We can only dramatically reduce the circulation.
95% of children should be vaccinated against measles. This is the threshold in order to ensure that the measles can not spread. In Flanders we are almost there: 92.5% of ten year olds are being vaccinated. Another small effort and then we can end this dangerous disease.
For measles, you are vaccinated twice. A first injection you get as a baby of 12 months, the second follows in the fifth grade. The vaccination is a combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella.
