User Experience Design: One-Day Delivery Service App

01
Introduction
A couple of months ago I wanted to get back my luggage, that i left in a hurry at my PG considering an on-going pandemic, from Bangalore to Kashmir. I searched online to find a door-to-door delivery service having pick and drop facility. It was shocking to find out that there were no such facilities that provided the same. And even if they did, the charges were way too much. Eventually, I had to search for the nearest courier delivery shop near my area and place a shipment order.

Later, an online research led me to three conclusions:
1. There was no online courier pick-up and drop facility in Kashmir.
2. The web-based tracking service provided by courier vendors did not have a good user experience.
3. The people were unaware of the standard courier delivery prices.

Understanding
the problem
With the advent of smartphones and the internet, courier delivery services are facing new challenges. Today, people enjoy door-to-door parcel pick-up and drop facilities. Due to which they find it difficult to follow the traditional approach of parcel delivery services (brick and mortar model of business). People value their time and convenience. Going down to the store and then sending the parcel does not seem reasonable. Thus, they are eager to book parcel pick-up and drop facilities through their mobile apps.

Furthermore, people have a better experience by using real time in-app tracking facility and feedback services.

Additionally, there is a need to have a standard courier delivery fee, bringing
transparency to the system and helping people save money.

Benefits of
delivery service

1. Seamless Online Booking of Parcel
Using this feature, customers can quickly book the courier’s pickup date and time by entering the destination and the parcel type. Besides, they can also see the tariff rate for online courier delivery from their added address to the destination. Thus, they won’t have to worry about the pricing.
2. Real-Time Tracking
Courier tracking is one of the biggest challenges of delivery businesses. They are bound to keep track of the parcel until it reaches the destination. Customers can  track the status of their booked parcels to estimate the exact time of delivery. Therefore, real-time tracking is nothing less than a boon for courier companies as well as their customers.
3. Less Paper Work
Courier business pivots around paperwork. Every product that you deliver comes with a ton of paperwork, which is hard to handle. However, an on-demand courier app significantly reduces the paperwork by storing every piece of product’s information and keeping its track until it is delivered. Thus, a mobile app automates everything and also saves up a lot of a hefty amount of money on stationary.
4. Timely Updates Through Notifications
Transferring a product from source to destination is an attention-demanding process. The app will instantly notify you if the drivers face some issues in the process. Besides, you can also update your customers with every checkpoint of your delivery services including, order received, pick up, under process, dispatched and delivered etc by sending push notifications. The more the customers stay updated, the more valued they feel.
5. Boost Customer Satisfaction
No matter which business you are running, customer satisfaction should be your primary goal. An on-demand courier delivery app provides the convenience of booking the package from any location and ensures that the customers don’t face any issues while availing your services.

The
Survey

A survey was conducted on a group of people using Google Forms. The purpose of the survey was to determine the basic ‘pain-points’ of users when it comes to sending a parcel through courier delivery services. The learning helped perform root analysis to reach the origin of the problem. Analyzing real-world data helped me understand that 93% of the group had used a courier service before.

The top three problems faced by the majority of the group are-
1. There is no efficient way to track packages.
2. People are unaware of standard courier delivery prices.
3. Parcels usually get delayed.
4. Unable to understand the user-interface

Q: Which delivery service application have you been using the most to save your time and money?

Q: What changes, if any, do you feel need to be made in the delivery service application to improve it's working conditions?
responses

- Need to work more efficiently on their updates regarding any product that they deliver.
- User friendly interface, easy tracking and ordering options.
- Availability,  accessibility and affordability.
- Accurate tracking and notification update.
- By giving offers to the students.
- Mostly through their website, I'd like them to simplify the navigation and de-clutter the website.

User
Persona
Focusing on a particular user helps to keep the user’s needs in mind and not get distracted whenever an idea for an additional feature or demand pops up. The analysis of the survey helped me gather different insights and typical patterns from the users’ answers.

Inspiration
board
I created an inspiration board before getting started with the visual design.
Neumorphism originated by combining the old classic skeuomorphism (interface objects that mimic their real-world counterparts in appearance e.g. recycle bin icon used for discarding files) with the flat design. Skeuomorphism laid the foundation of interface design and flat design emphasizing minimalism. Neumophism is different from other design trends because it adds a whole new functionality to the UI patterns with a lot of new potentials to innovate.

Typography
In typography and lettering, a sans-serif, sans serif, gothic, or simply sans letterform is one that does not have extending features called "serifs" at the end of strokes. Sans-serif fonts tend to have less stroke width variation than serif fonts. They are often used to convey simplicity and modernity or minimalism.

For my app, I have used used the following sans-serif typography:

Color
palette
Colors attract the attention of users and increase brand recognition, memory and participation.  They affect our way of thinking and behavior. Positioning and using them correctly is vitally important.
When it comes to reliability and trust, “Blue“ is the best choice. Accordingly, the apps that people have to give their private information to use it like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype are blue-colored.

For my mobile-application, I've chosen the following color palette:
