Introduction

De Stijl is a modern art movement that developed in the early 20th century. The name, De Stijl, means 'Style' and originated from the Netherlands. The movement was founded by Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesberg in 1917 based upon strict ideals of vertical and horizontal geometry.  It mainly surrounds painting, architecture and design which supports minimal, pared down aesthetics. These aesthetics consists entirely of non-objective form that focuses mainly on the most basic visual elements of horizontal and vertical lines and primary colours.(Art Movement: De Stijl | Artland Magazine, n.d.)

Originally, De Stijl was a magazine in which artists promoted their thoughts and ideas on art and abstraction.(Art Movement: De Stijl | Artland Magazine, n.d.)

Like many other art movements, De Stijl was a reaction against the horrible happening of World War I. It was in ideal nature in the sense that the members of this movement believed that art had the power of transformation. For these members, art was a means towards social and spiritual redemption.(Art Movement: De Stijl | Artland Magazine, n.d.)
Characteristics of De Stijl

De Stijl creates the idea of spiritual harmony and order. The style mainly consists of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines which creates square and rectangular forms. It also makes use of only primary colours(blue, red, yellow) and primary values(black, white, grey).(Puryear, 2014). These characteristics are easily recognizable, as can seen in figure 1(above).
