This movement started in Vienna, Austria in 1897. The movement was established by the following members, Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Josef Hoffman. Only a few years later Otto Wagner joined as the fourth member.(a dictionary of modern architecture, 2015)

The secession was established for individuals to break away from the traditional art ways in Vienna. This was the only way artists could move away from the traditional art ways in Vienna. The Vienna Secession is still commonly mistaken for Art Nouveau.(The art story, n.d.)

The building was built in 1898 to showcase the art of the Secession. Joseph Maria Olbrich built the building to showcase the contemporary art created during the secession.(Visiting Vienna, 2020)
The Vienna secession still continued even thought the group members separated. The secession still influences modern day art and some companies.
