Brief: Using the title ‘Myths and Monsters’ as a starting point, produce a series of illustrations as a narrative exploration.
Concept: ‘Perseus and the Quest for Medusa’s Head.’ I wanted to create a book that was predominantly black and white due to the seriousness of the story and also to show the influence from greek pottery, with it’s use of predominantly black illustrations. I also wanted to incorporate the use of ink, for a more traditional approach, which reflects the longevity of the myth. Pattern is also a dominant feature of the illustrations again influenced by greek pottery. The tall, thin format of the book was influenced by the story’s emphasis on Gods and flying.
Solution: A series of illustrations created using black fineliners and black ink, with spot colours added in photoshop. A texture is applied over the top of the illustrations to mimic a traditional woodcut technique.
