During the design/brainstorming process, many ideas were thrown around over the past few months. Logo design is not my day job, so whenever I had free time (sitting on the bus, before bed, etc.) or when an idea hit, I'd jot it into my notebook. Below are a couple pages leading up to the final design idea.

Below is the final design. The inspiration first came from the idea of a sailboat, where the sails of the boat are used to make up the second 'A' in 'CANAL'. After playing with the idea, the boat bottom was removed and the sails remained. This design is applicable to construction as well, since the triangle is the strongest shape due to its weight distribution from one point to two.
By using the second 'A' as the sails/triangles, there is less room for confusion as to what the company is called, since 'CAN' is much more identifiable than 'NAL' and by setting the beginning part of the word, it helps to continue to roll. Also, there is a possible subliminal factor since 'CAN' is not broken up, hopefully adding a positive edge to the logo.
