Palm Beach Daily News Cartoons: The first year

David Willson has lampooned  the Palm Beach scene for nearly 20-years as the editorial cartoonist for the Palm Beach Daily News
The First Year (1992)
From the very beginning, the full-out wackiness that can occur when you pack a small island town with some of America's wealthiest narcissists was clearly evident.

One of the very first cartoons pointed out Palm Beach's propensity for banning things.

Donald and Ivana Trump had divorced and Ivana was everywhere, in an effort
to establish her own celebrity

Palm Beacher's may be loaded, but what they want more than anything
is to be treated like royalty. They'll even pay good money for it.

Parking is a problem on the small island of Palm Beach. If you are a resident, there are
plenty of "Parking by Permit Only" spaces, but if you are a visitor it's a
different story ... no matter how legitimate your need is to be there.

Tim Burton's second Batman movie,
Batman Returns was the summer blockbuster
in 1992. It was one of the highest grossing movies ever, at the time.
A huge mega-mansion, with a secret owner, was also under construction
on the island. Hmmmm.

Homestead, Florida was practically demolished by Hurricane Andrew and
Prince Andrew had obviously had it with Fergie's antics.

Madonna's kinky soft-porn book,
Sex, with photographer Steven Meisel dominated the
media in the fall of 1992, presenting a problem for fashionable Palm Beachers.

Roxanne Pulitzer remarried to speed boat racer John Haggin and left Palm Beach,
ending the island's wildest sexcapade ever.

True to form, media coverage of the 1992 election was not focused on real issues
but Dan Quayle's assertion that the working girl sitcom Murphy Brown sent
the wrong message to young American girls.

We know that politicians will continue to campaign long after they have won the election.
But what happens if they lose the election?

The Palm Beach town government removed the fountain out in front of Town Hall
for private events ... until the National Socialist Workers Party came along and
threatened a lawsuit if the town didn't let them hold a parade and rally there.

Like many towns in America, Palm Beach has faced controversy about only displaying
secular symbols during the Holidays ... except for one that everyone agrees on.
