The Many Applications of Chemical Grade Alumina

Florida resident David D’Addario is a veteran of the metals industry, having joined in 1984 straight after graduating from Yale University. Today, David D’Addario serves as the chairman and CEO of New Day Aluminum, LLC.

New Day Aluminum has three subsidiaries: Noranda Alumina, Noranda Bauxite, and NICHE Industrials and Chemicals. NICHE comprises several businesses put together, one of which is a Gramercy, Louisiana-based producer of chemical grade alumina (CGA) used to make flame retardants, catalysts, refractories, glass, and ceramics. CGA is one of the two grades of naturally occurring alumina. The other is metallurgical alumina which is used in aluminum production.

The global market for CGA is growing thanks to growth in emerging economies. Macroeconomic growth in Eastern Europe and the Asia Pacific has boosted construction and industrialization in these regions, rising demand for glass and refractories. This has in turn driven up demand for alumina.

The market for CGA is also growing thanks to novel applications in the environmental conservation and sustainability space. For example, CGA is used to make energy-efficient lithium-ion batteries for electric cars. It is also used to make substrates for wastewater treatment.
