VSAF Badminton Tournament 2013 Promo No.1

---------------------------

"Why so serious!"
This is the first promo for VSAF Badminton Tournament 2013*.

The promo opens with propaganda music in the background, and a couple marching in proudly, holding the badminton rackets firmly by their sides. When reaching the middle of the court, they turn to face the camera in the stern standing position, seem to be ready to face something or someone extremely important. But then the music suddenly changes into the Banana Potato Song, the couple in no time transform themselves into striking stance, which resemble images used in communist propaganda posters or monuments. While their faces show an intense and serious expression, they do crab-walking to exit the screen.

The humor in this promo comes from our Vietnamese origin. Vietnam, along with China, Cuba, North Korea and few other countries, is a communist countrie. Still today in Hanoi, or Saigon, people wake up to the morning propaganda music played by local "radio". "Radio" here is a system of public services, which consists of speakers everywhere. Somewhere else in Europe or America, it only sounds when there are emergencies, or wars, or to report something important to the public. In Vietnam, it plays two or 3 sessions a day depending on the district. Some "local news", old propaganda songs, sometimes something else. The thing is that, people mostly don't take it very seriously. They would play badminton, or dance, or yoga in the morning with their own playlist. More than often the song would be old 90s hits, such as Venga Boys' Boom Boom Boom Boom.

The songs used in this video are from the super awesome Patrik Wallner's Visualtraveling - 'Kim Il-Sung's Birthday Party' (vimeo.com/41074044), and the Banana Song of Despicable 2.

VSAF = Vietnamese Student Association in Finland.
