Campus Pastiche Poster

Social Pastiche Poster
The project begins with choosing an art movement and a real UNL campus organization and creating a poster for said club. The poster is to be 18” x 24” and has been crafted to meet the chosen design criteria to the chosen art movement. I was very intrigued with the Swiss Design style. After minutes of going through the club list I eventually spotted my club of choice. I chose the Aerospace Club. Prior to my research I assumed that they would pair well together. Next, I would research key ideas, history, and characteristics on Swiss Design.  The Swiss Design style uses modular grid system, minimal graphics, and implements asymmetrical layouts and sans serif fonts. I don’t believe I did enough research so I could reflect on my later steps in the design process, but visually researching different posters and mediums within this movement were very helpful. The many posters I viewed were simple, clean, organized and honestly quite perfect.
After doing an adequate amount of research I started sketching up some ideas and jotting down notes of what I’m attempting to represent. I tried designing a poster for each sector of the Aerospace Club. (The Aerospace Club is made up of about six groups. Each group has a different field of expertise. For example, one club just focuses on rocketry, while another club focuses on competing for a spot at NASA in creating a rover for mars.) I sketched a few different posters for three of the 6 groups and decided to drop that idea and focus on the club as a collective. I focused on two ideas I had for my design process. One was to create a very minimal moon and rocket like space “collage”. And my other idea was to make the solar system into a square like grid system. I ventured both ways and I had better feedback with my grid solar system. I had a few different variations of the poster, but I remembered most of the posters I saw from this movement were very simple, so I removed the busy aspects within my poster, which meant getting rid of the stars I made for the background. My type was designed to help create a sense of motion within the grid system and help coordinate the viewers eyes around the poster. And a sense of hierarchy helps to clearly distinguish my headline, call of action, and website. Also, I added the actual Aerospace Club logo and the UNL logo as well to help “officiate” the poster. Overall, I really enjoyed this design and how it turned out in the end.
