On 16th April 2014, a ferry capsized off South Korea's southern coast killing 304 people, mostly high school students, in one of South Korea's most high-profile maritime disasters. The pain of families and bystanders were worsened by the massive controversy that surrounded the incident even after the horrific event. Such as the way the ferry crew behaved during the evacuation to save their own skins as well as the overcrowded state of the ferry itself to cut costs.

As a designer who is overseas away from my homeland, I still wanted to be able to play a part in this horrific event to attempt to help the people mourn this event. The many posters for Sewol that were shared only captured the sadness and hope associated with the event but were unable to incorporate the vital message of Sewol itself and what these posters were for. In a desire to deliver the message more effectively emphasis was put on the Sewol ferry itself and what exactly we should be praying for. Especially to spread awareness and respect to those affected by the incident.

The yellow used to highlight the ferry represents the hope we all need to hold onto in such dire situations. The navy blue is used for the background and for the ferry itself, holding two meaning. One being that the ferry was actually navy blue, and the second being that in the background there is a gradient of blue which represents the ferry being raised up from the sea. Also the ferry appears to be coming forward from the page, once again emphasising the ferry’s return from the sea.

This poster was spread across the globe in a rapid speed via SNS (Social Networking Service), news and magazine. Within 24 hours the poster was on YTN news and was gaining momentum. The poster was printed and shared in many different ways. This poster was successful in a way that it spread the message of Sewol in a positive way and the designed elements are being used to positively mourn the great loss.

For the one year anniversary of this sad event, the poster was redesigned adding a message to remember the event. Several websites and news once again showed their respects to the event by sharing the poster throughout the web.

A person from Korean children's book association requested for the poster to be converted into a bookmark in Korea remembering the incident. Which was in production and has been shared.
The Jujitsu team fundraised by selling 560 patches mourning Sewol incident.
A member of a jujitsu dojo in Lee Tae Won in South Korea, Il Oon Song made and distributed a Sewol patch based on the poster.  He and his colleagues personally visited many different dojos to create and sell these patches. All profits made were donated to the hero Dong-Soo Kim who saved more than 10 people who has suffered afterwards due to lack of support from the government financially and mentally.
A great big thank you to the Jujitsu team at Lee Tae Won for mourning the great loss together in these dire times.
