Yuen Long Nullah Redevelopment

Yuen Long Nullah Revitalisation - Conceptual Design
The circulation along the Yuen Long Nullah has always been known by its dirty, smelly and unpleasant experience. The underlying reasons are threefold. First, the nullah is a civil drainage structure designed in the old days where environmental performance and ecology value are often disregarded. Second, the nullah was specially designed based on the flood retention capacity. The calculation gives no provision to any additional structures or protrusion from the retaining walls, giving small flexibility for improving the environmental performance. Third, it is the perception in general among the engineer-driven landscape in the locality.
The nullah forms the main urban spine of the Yuen Long town center. It connects the Yuen Long Metro Station and various parts of the mixed commencial-residential district at street level. It takes around 20 minutes to travel back and forth along the two banks. With the aid of a few pedestrian crossings, the nullah serves a major narrative for local residents walking to the metro, going to the market, stop around and enjoy some leisure, and going home. It is a bustling experience.
We aim to create a pleasant walkway experience by improving the connectivity between spaces and maximizing its leisure potential. Three approaches are as follows:
(1) Re-connecting neighbourhood, and
(2) Enhancing walking experience,
(3) Linking up open spaces, with treatment of existing landscape features and walkway systems.
