Carter House Wayfinding

Carter House and Tutankhamun's Tomb Replica

The British archaeologist Howard Carter built this house in 1910, in Luxor, Egypt. He was living there when he discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb and until his death in 1939. The house was built in local Egyptian architectural style and materials with some European influences. It includes his workspace, photography darkroom, his artworks, some antiquities and other objects. The house was turned into a museum in 2009 and restoration took place in 2022. The wayfinding design, part of the restoration done by the American Research Centre in Egypt, aimed at designing bilingual signs that ease the visitors navigation, accessible, require low maintenance, and visualize aspects of Carter’s personality and the history of the house.. The signs included maps, directional signs, decals, display labels, and other informational and identification signs.

For the house branding, two typefaces were chosen. The Arabic typeface “Thuluth” is a script variety of Islamic decorative calligraphy, found hand-carved on wooden lintels on traditional houses in the context of Carter House. The san serif latin typeface "Granada" and the pictograms design were inspired by the classical art-deco era when the house was built.
