Puro is a project, above all, about the ocean.

A photobook that approaches the ocean as the space of research, to understand the dynamics involved in activities related to the Atlantic.
This publication aims to witness the people who dedicate their lives to the sea, analyzing the integration of these humans with nature, discovering the parallelism between the Men of the sea, from the classic fisherman to the contemporary surfer.

Portugal has an immemorial relationship with the sea that immediately transports us to the past. The country that, from the sea, gave new worlds to the world. This instinctive reaction leads many Portuguese to associate the ocean with everything but the natural resource and economic asset that it essentially is.

This photographic collection wants to explore the connection that the Atlantic provides, specifically, understand the relation between surfing and fishing community. Surfers and fishermen live so close but in completely different realities, both constantly in the middle of the water. Fishermen look for the marine life that lives where the waves break, while surfers enjoy the sculpted waves that the ocean creates.

Um trabalho de fotografia documental que aborda o oceano como espaço de exploração, para entender as dinâmicas envolvidas em atividades relacionadas com o Atlântico.
Esta publicação visa testemunhar as pessoas que dedicam a vida ao mar, analisando a integração destes humanos com a Natureza, descobrindo o paralelismo entre os Homens do mar, do clássico pescador ao contemporâneo surfista.

Portugal tem com o mar uma relação imemorial que imediatamente nos transporta para o passado. O país que, a partir do mar, deu “novos mundos ao mundo”. Esta reação instintiva leva muitos portugueses a associar o mar a tudo, menos ao recurso natural e ao ativo económico que ele essencialmente é.

Esta recolha fotográfica visa explorar as relações que o Atlântico proporciona, nomeadamente, entender a relação do surf com a comunidade pesqueira. O surfista e o pescador convivem tão próximos mas em realidades completamente distintas, ambos constantemente no meio da água. Os pescadores procuram a vida marinha que vive onde as ondas rebentam, enquanto os surfistas apreciam as ondas esculpidas que o oceano projeta.

Water is the centerpiece for life to be able to function in its natural state, and there is no better tribute to this phenomenon than to immortalize these men and women who live with the sea and for the sea.

It is curious that the man who lives off the sea travels to it to enjoy what the water has to offer; after all, our body is also made of water, and there is no more interesting parallelism than living at the sea while carrying a sea inside you at the same time.

It is the sea that keeps the marks of the sand when you run into it, and it is the sea that remembers in each wave, why you should continue to leave them.

The production of this book intends to provide different opportunities to explore, accompany and portray the Men of the Sea of the past, now and, I hope, of the future.

A água é a peça central para a vida conseguir funcionar no seu estado natural, e não há melhor homenagem a este fenómeno do que eternizar estes homens e mulheres que vivem com o mar e para o mar.

É curioso o facto do Homem que vive do mar se deslocar até ele para usufruir do que a água tem para oferecer; afinal de contas, o nosso corpo também é feito de água, e não há paralelismo mais interessante que viver o para o mar enquanto se tem, ao mesmo tempo, um mar dentro de si.

É o mar que guarda as marcas da areia quando se corre para ele, e é o mar que lembra em cada onda, o porquê de devermos continuar a deixá-las.

A produção deste livro pretende proporcionar diferentes oportunidades para explorar, acompanhar e retratar os Homens do mar do presente, do passado, e, espero, do futuro.

Pure are the people that, throughout the project, I got to know while photographing and sympathizing. The purity and simplicity of the sea spreads to everyone connected to it. Pure is what they feel when they are in the water, apart from the emotions and adrenaline, it is to be on the ocean, away from everyday life and immersed in this natural environment. The human being needs space and time to contemplate life. Pure people are those who dedicate their lives to the sea and for the sea, who leave for the high seas in the unknown of being able to return.

Sem mistura, límpido, genuíno.
Puras são as pessoas que, ao longo do projeto, fui conhecendo, fotografando e simpatizando. A pureza e simplicidade do mar propaga-se por toda a gente que a ele está conectado. Puro é o que sentem quando estão na água, além da emoção e adrenalina, é sobre estar no mar, afastado da vida quotidiana e imerso neste ambiente natural. O ser humano necessita de espaço e tempo para contemplar a vida. Puro(s) são aqueles que dedicam a vida ao mar e para o mar, que partem para alto-mar na incógnita de conseguirem voltar.
